Apricot Manitoba was bred by specialists of the Morden Agricultural Station, located in the province of Manitoba. This Canadian variety was obtained by crossing the Scout apricot from the Siberian-Manchu group with the well-known McCle variety.

Description and varietal characteristics

Fruit trees of the Manitoba variety are quite vigorous, with a dense and spreading crown. The frost resistance of trees and flowering buds is quite good. This variety is able to winter in central Russia without shelter. The flowers are attractive, very large, pink in color, which gives the variety a high decorative effect at the stage of mass flowering.

Large-sized fruits weighing at least 45 g. On young fruit trees, under the conditions of competent agricultural technology, fruits of very large sizes are formed, the weight of which reaches 95-105 g. The plant requires standardization in order to obtain a less abundant, but better crop. The fruits are characterized by an ovoid shape and are distinguished by the presence of a very elongated toe. The surface of apricots is bright orange, sometimes with a slight blush in area and intensity. There is a very strong pubescence of the skin.

Ripe flesh of bright orange color, with medium density and a very delicate sweet taste. Acid is felt, but not very pronounced. A large bone, freely located inside the fetus, with a bitter core. In favorable soil and climatic conditions, the fruits ripen around mid-summer.

Apricot of the Canadian Manitoba variety is recommended to be planted with seedlings at the age of one or two years. The step-by-step technology for planting apricot trees is as follows:

  • in the process of choosing an apricot seedling, you should carefully and thoroughly inspect the root system, which should be well developed, without over-dried and frost-bitten areas;
  • it is best to allocate well-lit and elevated areas protected from the cold wind to grow apricot;
  • the standard pattern for planting apricot fruit seedlings is approximately 4 x 5 or 3 x 5 m;
  • planting pits should be prepared in the fall, the optimal minimum size of such a pit is 70 x 70 x 70 cm, but may vary depending on soil fertility and the volume of the root system of the seedling;
  • A drainage layer should be placed at the bottom of the landing pit, after which the soil is mixed with humus, ammonium nitrate, lime, potassium salt and superphosphate.

After planting apricot seedlings, abundant watering is done through the irrigation grooves.

When growing apricot varieties "Manitoba" should take into account the description of the variety and botanical features of this fruit plant:

  • watering the fruit stands is required abundantly and several times per season, calculating the frequency of irrigation based on weather conditions and soil conditions;
  • the main irrigation is carried out in the middle of the spring period, at the stage of active growth of shoots, and about a couple of weeks before the stage of fruit ripening;
  • the last water-loading irrigation is required in the fall, at the stage of preparing apricot trees for winter;
  • apricot dressing is carried out in the spring, about three years after planting fruit seedlings in a permanent place;
  • the soil in near-stem circles must be periodically weeded and loosened, which helps to improve the access of oxygen to the root system of plants.

With proper cropping, the formation of a productive and high-quality crown takes no more than two years. At least two times during the period of active vegetation should be processed fruit trees in order to protect against diseases and pests.

Apricot called "Manitoba" is a very high-quality and winter-hardy variety from Canadian breeders. The height of the fruit tree can vary from four to five meters, which somewhat complicates the process of caring for garden plantings.

The variety was created with the participation of the Manchu apricot as the parent line, which largely determines its qualitative characteristics and description. According to the reviews and assessments of many experienced gardeners and consumers, the variety produces fruits of good taste, but with low rates of transportability.
