A common problem for novice poultry farmers is how to feed turkeys for rapid growth and weight gain at home. In order for birds to develop and gain weight correctly, corn and soy must be present in their diet. These are vegetable protein sources for turkeys. At different ages, additional components necessary for health and normal metabolism change.

How to feed turkeys for fast growth?

Chicks, grown-up and adult birds require a different ratio of vitamins and minerals. In addition to protein foods, greens are useful for turkeys - scalded nettles, lettuce, green onions, alfalfa.

Features of feeding young animals

From birth to two months, dairy products dominate in the diet of turkey poults, sources of calcium are cottage cheese, yogurt. The second component of their nutrition and energy source is cereals - barley and corn. Phosphorus is obtained from poultry bone meal.

For newborn chicks, on the first day, finely chop a boiled egg. On the second day, add cottage cheese, on the third - cereals. At the end of the first week, soybean meal is added to the same components. Turkey poults also need animal proteins, so the mixture is diluted with meat broth.

In the diet of monthly turkeys, cake is introduced to saturate the body with amino acids. To replenish the supply of omega-3 acids, they are given fish oil.

The following table will help you compose the menu. Indicators are indicated in grams per individual:

NameAge (in days)
Boiled eggs21
Fat-free cottage cheese25105
Crushed corn2815
a piece of chalk0,511,53

At the age of two months, new components are introduced into the mixture - finely chopped boiled carrots and potatoes.

The development rate of chicks is determined by weight. On the thirtieth day, the normal weight is 0.5 kilograms. In a month, the weight gain should be 100-150 percent. Three-month-old turkeys are prepared for the transition to adult feed - they are given vegetables, crushed cereals, cake, grass.

How to feed adult birds

The basis of the diet of turkeys at 10 months is animal protein. It is found in meat and fish waste, fermented milk products. Also, adult birds need grain, vegetable feed and legumes. In addition to chalk and shells, they are given crushed pine needles. Various ingredients are added in season.

In the spring and summer

With the arrival of warmth and the appearance of a green cover on the fields, birds are released to free pasture. Useful herbs for turkeys: alfalfa, clover, yarrow, gentian. Walking in the fresh air strengthens the legs, increases the appetite and the value of meat. Moderate sunbathing helps the body produce vitamin D. Diet at home for the summer:

  • corn;
  • barley;
  • wheat;
  • bran;
  • animal meal;
  • feed yeast.

Birds on cages should be given 200 grams of green food per day each.

A sample menu for adult turkeys is shown in the following table:

Cereals (corn, barley)200210
Wheat bran3040
Green food50250
Alfalfa hay15
Bone flour510
Cottage cheese1010
Feed yeast42
Crushed shell rock68
a piece of chalk32

On hot days, birds should not be left without water in the pasture and in the poultry house. In order for the turkeys to drink enough, simple drinkers are placed for them on the walk and they are changed during the day.

In winter

The peculiarity of winter feeding is the lack of fresh grass. Greens are replaced with silage, hay, straw. Wheat germ is also a source of protein for turkeys. The main food components are barley and corn.

In the cold season, birds need more fiber. Therefore, it will be useful for them:

  • boiled beets;
  • alfalfa hay;
  • crushed chestnuts.

In the summer, young branches and leaves of trees are harvested: birch, linden, aspen, mountain ash. The rods are hung in bunches and suspended so that the turkeys can chew on them. The crushed leaves are added to wet mixtures.

Subtleties of feeding at different periods

Turkeys need more vitamins during feeding, egg production and breeding period. The range of nutrients for brood males and layers also differs. Therefore, for the time of mating and egg-laying, the diet is adjusted for individual groups of birds. The feeding regime for fattening is also changing.

During the tribal period

In the diet of males, the proportion of protein is reduced to maintain a balance of substances and prevent excessive weight gain. Overfed turkeys lose interest in females. Dried fruits and feed yeast in their diet contribute to the breeding of healthy chicks.

Males eat less during the breeding season or may refuse food altogether. Therefore, to awaken appetite, ginger, garlic are included in the diet and more juicy feed is given.

During the laying period

It is also important not to overfeed the hens during laying. Obesity adversely affects egg production. With a lack of phosphorus and calcium during oviposition, the turkeys peck the laid eggs. There are also problems with the formation of eggs - the absence of a shell or yolk. In the diet of hens, the proportion of dairy products containing calcium is increased. As an additive, the birds are given crushed eggshells and bone meal.

Fattening for meat before slaughter

For novice poultry farmers, an easy way out is to feed the turkeys with compound feed. It already contains the required set of components. Ready mixes are intended for turkey poults of different ages:

  • starting - for chicks from birth to a month;
  • medium - for monthly birds;
  • main, finishing - for young animals from two months and adult birds.

Types of compound feed differ in nutritional value, there are granular and friable. Small granules are intended for small turkeys, and large ones for grown-up ones. Complete feed replaces plants, grain and vegetables, contains vitamins and antibiotics. But the use of dry mix increases the thirst. Birds should always have clean water.

The second way for experienced breeders to feed turkeys is with a self-prepared wet mix with grass and vegetables combined with ready-made cereal concentrates. Sunflower cake, wheat bran, crushed corn and boiled potatoes are added to the mash.

For weight gain, a diet is important:

  • in the morning, in the first half of the day - wet vegetable food;
  • in the afternoon, in the evening - grain, compound feed.

During the period of weight gain, turkeys are given walnuts, vegetable oil - so that the meat is tender and juicy. Zucchini and pumpkin are easily digested by young and old birds.

In order for the turkeys to eat more and gain weight better, spices are added to the feed: anise, pepper, cinnamon, garlic.

Use of vitamin and mineral supplements

Up to six months, turkeys and young animals require the following vitamins:

  • A - blindness develops from lack;
  • D - vitamin deficiency leads to rickets, feather loss;
  • group B - regulates metabolism, ensures normal growth and sexual development.

Avitaminosis leads to cannibalism and lack of appetite. With the onset of laying, laying hens that did not receive B vitamins have difficulties in hatching eggs, and the oviduct falls out.

From the seventh day of life, turkeys are given crushed shells, chalk and salt to help digest food. The source of carbohydrates for them is starch. Probiotics are used as a supplement to prevent indigestion. Calcium phosphate or tricalcium phosphate in powder is added to turkey feed. The proportion of the substance in the diet should not exceed two percent. In order not to be mistaken with the dosage, they use ready-made vitamin supplements - premixes. They are compiled specifically for the age of the birds.

Premixes should not be overused during lay. From an excess of vitamins in layers, premature molt begins and the ability to lay eggs disappears.

What problems can you face

The main problem with fattening turkeys is little or no weight gain. If the weight of the birds does not increase, you need to make sure they are healthy. Lack of appetite or weight loss are symptoms of a bacterial infection, helminth infection.

Lack of weight gain in healthy turkeys is a sign of an improperly formulated diet or feeding regimen.

How to increase the weight gain of birds:

  • feed more often, with the calculation of 800 grams of feed per day for each individual;
  • increase the proportion of succulent feed, prepare wet mash;
  • add a stimulating vitamin premix to the feed.

Turkeys do not gain weight well due to mistakes in keeping conditions:

  • draft, cold;
  • musty air;
  • lack of light.

Turkeys are physically unable to eat with a crowded goiter. The jam is formed due to the abundance of dry food.

What shouldn't be given to turkeys?

Products contraindicated for birds:

  • compound feed for cows and pigs;
  • moldy, wormy grains and vegetables;
  • large pieces of raw fish and meat;
  • pickled vegetables.

Potentially harmful foods:

  • bread - preference should be given to white, cooked with your own hands. Rye loaves ferment. Only the bakers at the factory know exactly the composition of the shop items;
  • tomatoes - green vegetables and tops contain the toxic substance corned beef;
  • fruits, berries - if they are accidentally and rarely eaten, they will not bring harm, but they are not suitable for constant feeding.

Turkey poults should not be given foods with fiber: bran, legumes, cabbage, beets. From bread soaked in milk, their digestion stops. When grazing or picking herbs in the field, you should avoid areas with plants poisonous for turkeys: hemlock, buttercup, milkweed, hemlock, night blindness.

A dangerous product is expired poultry feed. After the expiration date, it turns into a concentrate of toxins. Low-quality ready-made mixtures will also be of little use, since they do not saturate the birds with energy and vitamins in full. The price does not always correspond to the quality. Therefore, the best compound feed for turkeys is one prepared by hand.
