Growing strawberries in bags is a relatively new original and profitable way of compact cultivation of high-yield berries all year round. It was especially widespread in the southern regions, but also in central Russia, it allows you to collect fairly high yields.

Growing technology

Modern, accessible to almost everyone, the technology of growing garden strawberries in bags is quite simple and inexpensive. However, you can get a good harvest only subject to the rules of cultivation of this berry culture. In addition, a garden or garden plot should be equipped with everything necessary, including a greenhouse design, optimal-sized plastic bags, nutritious soil substrate, and high-quality planting material.

Currently there are a great many varieties of garden strawberries: Every year new varieties appear on the market of planting material - thanks to breeders who are actively engaged in the cultivation of improved and highly productive forms. However, preference should be given to those suitable for year-round cultivation, such as Honey, Marshal and "Albion".

Grade nameCharacteristicFeatures
"Queen Elizabeth II"Powerful medium-sized bushes, small-leafed. The berries are bright red in color, very large.Repairing variety, very frost-resistant and early.
"San Andreas"The berries are beautiful, large and very large, red with a strong sheen. The pulp is hard, orange-red, slightly uneven in color, moderately sweet.Variety of constant fruiting of American selection. One of the best for industrial cultivation.
"Temptation"The fruit mass is up to 30 g. The berries are beautiful, have a bright nutmeg aroma. Productivity reaches 50 t / ha.Repairing large-fruited variety, propagated by branded seeds and vegetatively.
"Lyubava"The bushes are spreading, well leafy. Rhomboid-shaped berries with a neck, red and shiny. They have an average weight of 5.5 g.Average drought resistance, high heat resistance.

Advantages and disadvantages of the method

Year-round cultivation of strawberries has become popular in our country relatively recently, but now you can see all the advantages and disadvantages of this method of cultivation. The advantages of the method:

  • year-round receipt of marketable berries;
  • the opportunity to meet consumer demand for berries in the off-season;
  • attracting a significant number of potential wholesale buyers throughout the year;
  • high profitability, allowing you to reach the payback period for a maximum of a year.

The disadvantages of the method:

  • limited choice only suitable varieties for year-round cultivation;
  • the need for artificial pollination of plants;
  • high starting costs for structures, soil and planting material;
  • the need for careful care.

Any technology for growing garden strawberries year-round is based on the fact that plants receive additional lighting - usually using fluorescent lamps. This implies an increase in energy costs.

Growing strawberries in plastic bags is possible in almost any room where conditions favorable for this berry culture can be created. Greenhouses are most often used for this purpose, so the cost of such structures should be added to the costs.

How to plant strawberries in a bag

Features of the preparation of the bag

Flour, cereal or compound feed bags are well suited for planting: they have the optimal combination of density and volume. The small diameter and considerable height of the bags make it possible to arrange seedlings on the usable area as compactly as possible.

For self-made bags it is recommended to take the most dense greenhouse or reinforced film: it needs to be cut into identical rectangles 2 m high and 80-100 cm wide. The two sides of each rectangle must be soldered or carefully stitched. Ready-made bags should be sufficiently tightly filled with a soil mixture, slightly acidic or neutral. You can use ready-made soil suitable for cultivating garden plants, but the most economical option is a soil mixture made independently from equal parts of peat and perlite, as well as a composition based on sod land, sand, sawdust and humus soil.

Landing rules

Approximately 10 cm of medium-fraction gravel or expanded clay should be poured into the prepared clean bags as drainage, and then filled to the top with disinfected or heat treated soil substrate. After filling and tamping, in bags it is required to make vertical cuts from 6-8 cm long on all sides. It is better to place them in a checkerboard pattern, at a distance of 23-25 cm from each other.

In the holes you need to be very careful, in compliance with all standard requirements, to plant strawberry bushes - without unnecessarily deepening, and place two or three plants in the upper, open part of the planting container. You can arrange containers both on the floor, and on racks or special shelves. The main condition for growing is adequate coverage of all bags.

Growing recommendations

After planting in bags of garden strawberries, competent care is required, on which the quantity and quality of the crop will depend, especially if it is planned to receive high-quality berry all year round.

Top dressingIrrigation ActivitiesProtection against diseases and pests
For top dressing, it is recommended to use fermented mullein, diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10, and wood ash. You can use bird droppings, diluted in a ratio of 1:20. However, the highest efficiency is shown by high-quality complex water-soluble fertilizers.In order to increase the efficiency of irrigation, it is recommended to install a drip irrigation system based on the supply pipe, with a lead to each landing bag of tubes with droppers at the ends. Such a system will allow combining irrigation with the introduction of liquid fertilizers.At the beginning of leaf growth, it is necessary to spray strawberry bushes with 1% Bordeaux liquid with the addition of 1% colloidal sulfur. Good results are obtained from preventive spraying of plants with Fitosporin. With severe disease damage, the bushes are treated with insectofungicides.

In the autumn-winter period it is very important to monitor the microclimatic conditions in the room where strawberries are grown. A sharp fluctuation in temperature indicators and a decrease in the illumination of plants should not be allowed.

Gardeners reviews

Year-round cultivation of strawberries is possible in several ways, but recently the method of cultivation in bags, due to its simplicity, has become especially popular. Gardeners respond very positively about him. Of course, such a technology requires starting investments, but all the costs pay off quickly enough.
